I first met Ivano Bonfanti back in the mid 90’s when he was in London based mod band The Direction. Fast forward nearly 20 years and we are sat in The Lord Clyde in Borough, South London where Ivano is telling me about a new band he’s putting together with a couple of lads at work. They’re rehearsing around the corner so a week later I meet bassist Jez Payne and guitarist Joe Duggan in a rehearsal studio and listen to a set of ’79 styled mod pop. I like it. In fact I like it a lot, a few tweaks here and there and I think we’re onto something. We needed a name and more importantly, we needed a drummer. An advert soon puts us in contact with Len Fleckney, ex-Long Tall Shorty and Eleanor Rigby, and we sound like a proper band. Proper? Now that sounds good and they sounded good, yeah, we’ll take that. Six months of weekly rehearsals follow, building up to our debut gig at the 100 Club in Oxford Street with The Scene and a recording session with Pat Collier at Perry Vale Studios. It works, the gig goes well and the session is good, we’re on our way. More gigs, radio play and more recordings follow, the results of which are hopefully on your turntable now as you read this. But this is merely the start, 2017 promises to be an exciting time for us with more gigs and recordings, yep, it’s gonna be Proper!
